In Our Spotlight: Orphan Helpers

By Michelle Blackmon

Orphan Helpers is dedicated to serving and ministering to the physical and spiritual needs of orphaned, abandoned, and incarcerated youth and children. They assist orphanages and detention centers internationally. They work to provide teachers with a focus on Central America. They are an interdenominational Christian ministry.

Orphans in Salvadoran state-run orphanages live with little hope for their futures. Due to overwhelmed government staff, dilapidated facilities and overcrowding, orphans in El Salvador face a bleak future. For most, their only choices (if they even have them) are joining the one family they can find—local crime-ridden gangs—or seeking employment in the agricultural sector with low wages and dangerous working conditions.

A Christian non-profit group called Orphan Helpers (www.orphanhelpers.com) is dedicated to changing this sad reality. Orphan Helpers offers young Salvadorans without hope an alternative to fleeing Central America for the U.S. Many Salvadoran youth attempt to make it to the U.S. border where, upon crossing, they face a life dodging immigration law and detention centers attempting to avoid deportation back to their former lives mired in poverty and crime in El Salvador.

Orphan Helpers is uniquely positioned to serve as an alternative to orphans plagued by gang violence or underpaid jobs as child laborers. They are committed to creating self-sufficient orphanages with a holistic approach to meeting the needs of Salvadoran youth. With our dedication to investing in the future of Central America and its most valuable asset—its youth—we are the model for real, effective orphan outreach.

Their plans for the future are an exciting example to anyone who believes in sustainable development and making a difference with orphans overseas.  Don’t hesitate to contact them if you would like to hear more about how they enable orphans through their education initiatives and ongoing efforts working with the government in El Salvador.
